EN 1656-Bactericidal activity in veterinary area. UNE-EN 1656: 2010 + AC: 2010. Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in the veterinary area. Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 1).

Test accredited by ENAC (National Accreditation Entity).

The standard uses four mandatory micrrorganisms in testing for products of general disinfection (Enterococcus hirae, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus), the interfering substance may be chosen from the condition of low dirt or high level dirty, and mandatory temperature of 10ºC. For products teat mammary gland disinfection the standard three mandatory microorganisms (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus uberis), a specific interfering substance for these products and a mandatory temperature of 30ºC must be used .The time required for general disinfection products is 30 minutes, and for teat disinfection products is 5 minutes. Additional times may be 1, 5, 15 or 60 min and additional and optional temperatures of 4, 20 or 40ºC may be used. The product must be tested to at three mandatory concentrations to include one concentration in the non-active interval and one in the active interval. The highest concentration of product that can be tested is 80%. The test can be performed by the dilution method or by the membrane filtration method. To consider the bactericidal product must demonstrate a log reduction of 5 in the number of viable cells.
