ASTM E2274-Evaluation of laundry sanitizers and disinfectants. ASTM E2274-16. Standard test method for evaluation of laundry sanitizers and disinfectants.

Accredited by ENAC (National Accreditation Entity).

This method is designed to evaluate the sanitizers and disinfectants for laundries used in automatic washing process using usual eashing water volumes, for demonstrating the reduction or complete death of a bacterial population in tissues and wash water after a single wash. This method is designed for testing vegetative bacteria, but can be adapted for testing fungi or viruses. The method simulates the washing conditions to which a set of tissues inoculated with microorganisms is placed in a volume of the product solution evaluated in the proportions indicated by the manufacturer and stirred. After a period of contact time, the washing water, the neutralization solution, and the fabric used, are individually cultured quantitatively (cleaning effectiveness), or qualitatively (disinfecting efficacy). The following species of bacteria are used: Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but can include other bacteria at the manufacturer choice. The test can be performed under clean conditions (without organic matter), or dirty conditions (using any organic matter from the proposed alternatives). Six fabric pieces are used for each microorganism. Three pieces for the test product and three for the controls. These inoculated pieces are inserted between the folds of a fabric piece of 15 g. The chamber for exposure closed is hold in agitation during the time specified by the manufacturer. After expiry of the exposure time, the brackets and inoculated tissue pieces are removed and placed in a neutralizing broth. The broth filtrate neutralized, the neutralization broth itself and dilutions prepared from them, are cultured for the presence of the inoculated microorganisms, and their reduction if expressed in log10. In the test validations duplicate controls include microbial count. The counting of surviving microorganisms after the washing process simulation is performed by quantitative counts in duplicate with 5 dilutions base 10.
