ASTM E653−91 (2009). Standard Test Method for Effectiveness of Aerosol and Pressurized Space Spray Insecticides Against Flying Insects.

Test not accredited in our laboratory.

This test is intended to evaluate the effectiveness of insecticides used in aerosol or space sprays against houseflies (Musca domestica L.) and other flying insects (mosquitoes, flying moths, wasps, ...), but is not designed to know the residual activity. OTA-II standards can be used for oil-based aerosol products or TOAPS products for water-based aerosol products.

The test can be done in small groups performing 10 replicas, each of them with 100 flies, or large groups performing 5 test replicas, each with 500 flies. This number of replicas will be made both with the product submitted to the test, and with the reference control product.

The customer must provide the dispenser that he recommends for his product, from which the measured volume recommended by the standard will be applied. The tests are carried out in the test chamber recommended by the standard (Peet-Grady chamber), located in a test room with temperature (27 ± 6ºC) and relative humidity (50 ± 5%) controlled. The test chamber must be previously evaluated to exclude that it may be contaminated by placing in it a group of test flies for 12 to 16 hours with food, without insecticide, to verify that no more than 10% die, nor affect more than 10% within 30 minutes after the release inside.

The test will use flies, raised in the laboratory, with an average of 4 days of age, and no more than 6 days to perform the test. The amount of aerosol used is 3.0 ± 0.5 g/28 m3 in a continuous flow for the evaluation of grade A (pressurized aerosol) or 6.0 ± 0.5 g/28 m3 in continuous flow for the grade B pressurized evaluation. The exposure is carried out with the chamber closed at a temperature of 27 ± 1ºC for 15 minutes. The affected insects are counted at 5 and 10 minutes after the application of the product. Once the exposure time has elapsed (15 minutes), the ventilation of the test chamber is carried out, collecting the affected flies and following them for 24 hours under appropriate conditions of temperature and feeding.

For both the grade A and grade B assessments, the product evaluated meets the requirements of the test, if the mortality obtained at 15 minutes is equal or not lower by 5 percentage points with respect to the reference standard used.
