Fresh water plants growth inhibition test (OECD-221: 2006- Lemna spp. Growth Inhibition Test)

This standard is designed to evaluate the toxicity of substances for freshwater aquatic plants using plants of the Lemna genus (lentils of water).

In order to carry out the test, the cultures of Lemna plants (Lemna gibba and Lemna minor, generally) in exponential growth are allowed to grow in monocultures in the presence of at least five concentrations of the test product, during a period of seven days.

The objective of the test is to quantify the toxic effects of the test product with the vegetative growth of aquatic plants during this period, evaluating measurable variables. The limit of the test corresponds to a product dose concentration of 100 mg/L. The study includes the pH measurement, the light intensity, the concentrations of the test product, the counting of the number of units of plants and the measurement of at least one other variable (total area of ​​plants, dry weight or fresh weight). From the specific average rate of growth recorded in the series of solutions of the test product, the concentration that provides around a percentage growth inhibition rate, expressed as ErCx (or EyCx), is determined. An additional response variable used is production performance. In addition, the effect of the lowest observed concentration (LOEC: lowest observed effect concentration) and the non-observed effect concentration (NOEC: no observed effect concentration) can be determined statistically.
