Enterococcus spp. Detection, counting and identification

Enterococcus faecalis, E. faecium, E. durans and E. hirae in water are detected and quantified by methods described in ISO 7899-2:.. 2001 (Water quality Detection and counting Intestinal Enterococci Part 2: Method membrane filtration). Furthermore, they can occasionally determine other species of Enterococcus and Streptococcus species may (particularly S. bovis and S. equinus). These Streptococcus species have a long survival in water and is unlikely to be quantitatively determined.
In the water analysis, enterococci can be considered as indicators of fecal contamination. However, it is useful to note that some enterococci found in water may occasionally come from other habitats.
ISO 7899-2 standard the: 2001 specifies a method for the detection and enumeration of intestinal enterococci in water by membrane filtration. This rule is especially adapted to the analysis of drinking water, swimming pool water and other clean or disinfected water. Anyway, the method can be applied to all types of waters, except for those which have abundant materials in suspension or interfering germs. It is particularly suitable for the examination of large volumes of water, with a low content of Intestinal Enterococci.
