EN 1040: 2006. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of the basic bactericidal activity of antiseptics and chemical disinfectants. Test method and requirements (phase 1).

Test accredited by ENAC (Spanish National Accreditation Entity)

The standard uses two mandatory organisms in the test (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus), a mandatory temperature (20°C) and a mandatory contact time (5 min). Additional and optional contact times of 1, 15, 30 or 60 min, as well as additional and optional temperatures of 4, 10 or 40°C can be used. The product should be tested at three mandatory concentrations to include one concentration in the non-active range and one in the active range (these last two concentrations are selected by the laboratory performing the test, because they are the internal control of the test). This test is intended for evaluating basic bactericidal activity of disinfectants hence no interference substance is requiered to be included. The product can be assayed by the dilution method or by the membrane filtration method. To account for the bactericidal product, a log reduction of not less than 5 in the number of viable cells must be demonstrated.
