EN 1104: 2018. Paper and board intended to come into contact with foodstuffs - Determination of the transfer of antimicrobial constituents.

Test not accredited yet in our laboratory.

This test specifies a method for the determination of transfer antimicrobial constituents from paper and board materials and articles intended for food contact. Circular pieces of 10-15 mm diameter of the test sample are placed on culture medium inoculated with a bacterium (Bacillus subtilis) and fungus (Aspergillus niger) spores in Petri dishes. The side intended to come into contact with foodstuffs must be placed face-downwards (if this is not clearly defined, both sides shall be tested). Furthermore, if the sample is not homogeneous, a test must be performed for each representative area. Three 3 Petri dishes with 3 circular pieces each per test microorganism must be tested (9 pieces per test microorganism). Furthermore, the test is performed in parallel with positive and negative controls. After incubation of the plates with the test samples for 3 days for bacteria and 5 days for fungi, the existence of an inhibition zone is evaluated. Samples without evidence of an inhibition zone area are considered to contain no water-soluble antimicrobial substances, while evidence of an inhibition zone is an indicator of the release of antimicrobial constituents.
